    The Great Leveling Guide Scam

We all know that FFXIV is a highly confusing game, and people often look to get help in any way possible. While it may appear promising, don't get too excited just yet. These so-called guides may appear to be promising at first, but are hardly worth the exorbitant costs associated with them.

All You Will Get are Empty Promises

While the leveling guides promise lots of things, none of them really follow through. Here are a few of the ones that people have been making.

    1. Complete Leveling Guide to Level 50 – This obviously lacks truth to a monstrous extent. Not only are there no rank 50 players in the game, but the amount of party play required at later levels means there is no way the guide writers have got to rank 50, let alone had the time to write a guide. Furthermore, it usually takes quite some time after a MMO launch for somebody to write a highly useful leveling guide. If you need help, our Guides Section is free to use, and has a very helpful community to boot!

    2. Money Back Guarantee – If these sites actually offered a money back guarantee, they wouldn't even be in business. People would just download the text file, and make an excuse to return it soon thereafter. Any purchases made are final, so be wary of making any purchases.

    3. Advanced Gil Making Techniques – Currently, the richest people in FFXIV are high level crafters. Furthermore, earning gil is not hard at all in FFXIV. The best way to make gil is to do Guildleves, and Learn Crafting. From there, hard work and dedication will net anybody a considerable sum of Gil. You should also take the time to Set up a Retainer, and can also use our Marketplace as a suitable alternative.

    4. In Depth Levequest Guide – Unlike everything in FFXIV, levequests are quite straightforward. You just have to show up at the Aetheryte, and the minimap will direct you every step of the way. While some levequests can be hard, don't fork over money for stuff that is common knowledge. A main quest guide would also be nice, but we have those in our Guides Section.

    Now for the Disclaimers

There are lots of other empty promises as well, but each guide seems to come with a disclaimer. When browsing a site, you know it is a scam if you come across a message such as:

3 Days Left in Guides Contest

On the other hand, the Guides Contest is still going strong, and you have 3 more days (10/14/2010, 11:59 pm PST) to finalize your submissions. For all those participating, I look forward to reading your final work, and will immediately put all good guides in the Guides Section.

As for the Videos Contest, we are going to be postponing it until a later date - the contest will resume sometime in the near future, so check back for the latest news. I do apologize if you have started making a video, but look on the bright side of things – you have even more time to refine it and make something great by the time it comes back!

I can feel the tension in the room right now, so let's take things down a notch and end things on a funny note. Alia made another entertaining comic today, let's take a look!

Have a great day, and remember to be wary of all FFXIV Leveling Guides!

I just received my Distant Worlds newsletter, and the main feature of this month was an interview with none other than Susan Calloway. Just in case you don't already know, Mrs. Calloway is the primary vocalist in 'Answers', the FFXIV Theme Song. I know a lot of you have heard the short version from the Prerelease Trailer, but you should really hear the full version, which is in our Videos Section.

    The Interview

Now that we have you listening to the much better full verison of Answers, take time to read the interview, conducted by Distant Worlds' resident reporter, Claudia Lasareff-Mironoff.

CLAUDIA: You recently recorded a new soundtrack called Answers from FFXIV. Can you tell us about the preparation process before the actual session?

SUSAN: Most of the preparation was done by Arnie and his team. They recorded the soundtrack with the orchestra and of course Arnie had to create all the scores for the orchestra in advance, which is a ton of tedious work!! He checked keys with me and let me hear it before the session so I would know what to expect. But my vocal work happens right at the session when we record. You capture an honest performance this way, which is much more musical and more artistic.

CLAUDIA: How long did the session take?

SUSAN: We did it in one day . . with breaks of course and lots of water !

Zissling recently finished Toll of the Warden, the rank 30 main quest of Ul'dah. While we could very well entertain you with a nice guide, we have instead opted to bring you a video! As expected, this main quest prominently features the Path Companion you earn at rank 20, so you might want to the previous 2 videos before moving onto this one.

Parleying is also a step in this particular quest - the parleying difficulty is quite high, and tutorials provided are rather lacking. Therefore, I highly suggest you read FFXIV Origin's Parleying Tutorial beforehand.

Spoiler Alert: These videos contain cutscenes that are part of the Rank 30 Main Quest of Ul'dah. If you would rather wait and experience things for yourself, you might want to avoid pressing play.

It looks like the Path Companion has taken on a slightly more active role in the main quest. Hopefully they will continue to grow and get more involved as the storyline progresses. Anyways, we will bring you the next step once rank 35 (or the next required rank, whatever it is) has been reached. Until then, see you next time!

Welcome to the very first FFXIV Origin Spotlight, a section devoted entirely to our members who make great submissions on the forums. Today's spotlight falls on none other than Alia for frequently creating some entertaining comics.

Let's take a look at a couple of them!

    Logging

I have always wondered why Botany yields strange items such as Dodo Feathers and Beehive Chips.

If being a Botanist was this exciting in FFXIV, I would never play another Discipline!

    My First Real Leve

I know that everybody has had to deal with the occasional runaway mobs on their levequests, and the distance some mobs run is downright ridiculous.

Even with Gravity equipped, it can still be hard to apply it if you don't know the mob is a runner.

If you would like to read more of these entertaining comics, you can find them here. As for Alia, keep up the great work!

Yesterday, Square Enix released some exciting new information about Incapacitation, but the sad part is the description was somewhat confusing. Because of this, myself and Zissling were very curious to see how it worked. While he was busy pummeling the mobs to oblivion, I kept him up with my extremely awesome heals. As we both found out, incapacitation is one of FFXIV's best kept secrets (until now)!

    How Incapacitation Works

Some mobs have body parts that are highly susceptible damage, and certain Disciplines have the perfect ability to do them in. We only used concussive blow during the course of the video, but there are a vast number of skills that rock a particular mob's world. If you are curious as to how they work, take a look at the incapacitation charts from Yesterday's News.

    What does Incapacitation Do?

According Square Enix, incapacitation does the following things:
    • Weakens the Monster – This definitely applied to the Aldgoat Billy, as his regular attacks hit for way less than before. Sadly, the Billy was near death whenever the horns were knocked off.
    • Prevent the monster from using Special Attacks – This may work with Certain mobs, but the Aldgoat Billy was still able to use his charge attack. However, the knockback distance was dramatically reduced.
    • Influence the type of loot dropped – Not only do incapacitation effects affect the type of loot dropped, but the loot is generally better than before. The Skull Eyepatch is a great item that will easily be an upgrade for most Disciplines of War.

    Things I Learned about Incapacitation

There are a lot of things I learned that Square Enix doesn't tell you about Incapacitation. Over the course of the few hours tested, I learned a few invaluable things.
    • Lay off the DPS. – Let the Discipline responsible for incapacitating the mob do the job before you bring on the damage. When myself and Zissling were fighting Aldgoat Billies, the mob was near death every time the effect happened. Boss fights will probably be somewhat different in this regard, but don't overload on damage when it comes to regular mobs.
    • It takes longer to kill the mob. – Naturally, it will take a little while longer to kill the mob when holding back on the DPS, but trust me when I say the rewards are well worth the extra time spent.
    • The loot is much better. – I tested 3 different types of mobs, and you are adequately rewarded for the extra time spent. The Aldgoat Horns are all a key component in Horn Glue, which currently sells for top gil on every server.
    • It doesn't require a Battle Regimen. – Due to the fact that SE listed both of them together, many people have been led to believe that a Battle Regimen is required to access the incapacitation effects. This isn't true at all, end of story.

Now you should be ready to go incapacitate mobs yourself. If you need any further information, please review the incapacitation charts. Otherwise, please drop a line if confusion persists.

Square Enix just updated their Lodestone FAQ, and this time it pertains to many ongoing questions about Character Creation.

    Character Creation

    Q. Will I be able to do the main scenario quests for the city-states other than the one I choose as my starting destination when creating a character?
    A. In fitting with the role of the adventurer as a champion of the nation in which his or her journey begins, players can partake only in the main scenario storyline of the starting destination chosen during character creation. We invite you to peruse the various plot synopses and NPC introductions to decide which epic adventure sounds most enticing to you!
