This is just a starter's guide, which means it only covers the Main Scenario Quest - "Fade to White"
For those who came from FFXI you might see that the 'Path Companion' sounds very similar to FFXI's Adventuring Fellow. However, very little is known about it at the moment. So lets cover what we do know, and how to get one.
First, this is part of the Main Scenario Quest, meaning you must have completed the previous Main Scenarios from your city to reach this cross-point. This quest is similar to all three city-states with only the difference being dialog.
So to be frank, here are the steps to taken for this quest, spoiler free even~!Anything beyond this quest, I do not know.
- Level up to minimum of Rank 20 for any job.
- Head to Ul'dah's Market Wards location, coordinates (x,y): (4,4)
- When choosing Teleport via Interactions from Main Menu, you would see the new choice labeled "Merchant Wards", choose that. (not to be mistaken with "Market Wards")
- Head to the door at the end of the hallway, and Main Menu -> Interact -> Open it.
- Speak to Minfilia
- Speak to Minfilia again
- Agree when prompted to
- Speak to Tataru, from the entrance you've teleported in from.
- Pick a Path Companion
- Wait until your new NPC Linkpearl "Path of the Twelve" glows (unknown trigger factor)
- When it Glows, Listen to the Linkpearl, Main Menu -> NPC Linkpearls -> Path of the Twelve
- Return to Merchant Wards, Ul'dah
- Speak to Tataru
- Talk to your Path Companion
- Pick a Name for your Path Companion
- Talk to Momodi at The Quicksand (it's the area where Adventurers' Guild is, she is located behind another counter)
- Agree when prompted to
- Quest ends, receive your reward.
Now, you might be all excited and such about picking you companion, however we are extremely limited compared to what FFXI offered.
Here is where were are limited. First the obvious, stated by SE;
If being forced to have a particular personality for a particular race/gender wasn't bad enough, we are also limited to 5 possible choices of Disciples your Companion can be; Gladiator, Lancer, Archer, Conjurer, and Thaumaturge. Additionally we are not allowed to pick how they look. Such as, there is only 1 face associated to each race/gendar/clan.The personality of NPC will vary greatly depending on which combination is chosen. The following is a list of the nine different types of personalities available:
Midland Hyur Male
A fine if somewhat conventional companion, possessing a strong sense of justice, an indefatigable spirit and…so on.
Midland Hyur Female
A gregarious though slightly egocentric young woman. If you can put up with her, she won’t let you down.
Elezen Male
Being a man wholly focused on his mission, this highborn fellow can seem rather curt, if not downright rude.
Elezen Female
A studious sort with exemplary manners. Serious and trustworthy, as you’d expect, but possibly a little…stiff for some tastes. Still, if you loathe over-familiarity, she may be just the companion—sorry, colleague for you.
Lalafell Male
It is said that a hero lies within us all. In the case of this rather sheltered young Lalafell, one might assume that the hero in question does so under his bed, hoping his harpy of a mother won’t think to look for him there. Will you be the one to coax him out?
Lalafell Female
Does your world want for a wealth of wordplay and wit? An abundance of alliteration, assonance aplenty and a soupcon of sibilance to seal the deal? Well, you were warned.
Miqo’te Female
A lady who knows what she likes, and likes a little bit of everything. Don’t be fooled by her coquettish manner and all-too-apparent charms; in her breast beats the fiery heart of a warrior. Not to worry, though, she’ll be gentle—assuming that’s what you like.
Roegadyn Male
When the going gets tough, it’s often nice to have a big, earnest, slightly credulous friend around—and they don’t come much bigger than this straight-talking Roegadyn.
Highland Hyur Male
Women, wine, war and women. Just four—alright, three of the things which tickle the fancy of this brute of a man. He doesn’t so much stand on ceremony as stamp on it until it stops moving.
And you've guessed it, the way you pick them is extremely similar to the way you pick your retainer. However, it is bit more annoying as you are only given a random 5 types of faces out of the ones below every time you pick a class. So you might need to cycle a few times until the one you want shows up.
So, yes, that means theres only a handful of choices you can make for how your Path Companion's face will look. Here are their faces captured via screenshots. I could try to take the time to remodel them, but for the time being this would have to do.
In order of Race - Clan - then Male / Female in photo
The class doesn't matter, face is still the same, but I tried to pick the best screenshots of their face, so mostly gladiator, lancer, and archer pictures here.
Hyur -Midland
Hyur - Highland
Elezen - Wildwood
Elezen - Duskwight
Lalafells - Plainsfolks
Lalafells - Dunesfolks
Miqo’te - Keepers of the Moon
Miqo'te - Seekers of the Sun
Roegadyn - Hellsguard
Roegadyn - Sea wolves
