Hi Folks, I was having an awful time figuring out repairs, so thought I'd save the youngsters some hassle and write up this guide on what to do when your equipment is suffering.
You'll know it's time to repair when you see a little sword and shield icon show up. Clicking on it brings up a not very helpful message in Japanese that most likely says to get your act together and fix your gear already. (Apologies to the actual Japanese speakers... I'm sure that message is incredibly helpful.) There are two ways (eventually there will be three) to put your equipment back together.
For the no-hassle method, you can visit the repair NPC in your local city. In Ul'dah, look for Gogorano, a lalafell standing inside the northern gate (Gate of Nald). Make sure you're on the inside of the giant gate, he's a bit to the west of it. In Limsa Lominsa, seek out Braetonieu between West and East Hawker's Alleys. And in Gridania, you can find Meara off to the side in the Ebony Stalls area. These NPCs also offer an option to "do your own repairs for 250 gil." Do not pick this. At the moment, repairs appear to have a very low failure rate, and choosing this option just gives you access to a crafting facility that improves your chances of crafting success.
Now repair NPCs can only fix up your equipment to around 75% or so, which means it'll pretty much break right away after a little while. The real way to fix it up is a little more work.
First be sure to unequip the piece of equipment you want to repair. There aren't any helpful error messages just yet, so you'll just have to remember to do this. While you're looking at this piece of equipment, click on it in your inventory to get the equipment's detailed info screen. This screen will show you what item you need to repair it, as well as the base type of the equipment. Next, you'll need to switch to the proper crafting profession. This depends on the base type of the equipment, for example Tanner profession for leather goods, or Weaver for cloth, or Blacksmith for most weapons. Pugilists, note that a weapon requiring bone chips to repair (your weathered hora, for example) requires the Goldsmith profession to fix it up.
Once you have the right profession, the right repair item, and unequipped your gear, you can go back into your inventory and click on the "Repair" button, bringing you to the synthesis screen. Put your repair item into the material slot and fix up your gear!
I might suggest that if you come across this thread and know how to find items needed for repair (such as Growth Formula Alpha, synthesized by Alchemist profession for the Weathered Staff), let us know. Please don't throw away those bone chips!
