  • Using a Retainer in Final Fantasy XIV

In FFXIV, there is no way to sell your items without a retainer present. Therefore, proper retainer usage is an absolute must in Eorzea. I know it may sound complicated, but don't you worry about a thing.

Today, I am going to be showing you how a retainer works in all aspects of FFXIV. First, I will guide you through the selection process. From there, we are off to the market wards to prep them for business. After everything is said and done, you will be nothing short of a selling machine!

    Retainer Selection

In Limsa Lominsa, you must go through Ursulie in order to select a retainer. She can be found in the Drowning Wench (Adventurers' Guild), right behind the bar. I was personally looking to hire a Hellsguard Roegadyn retainer as big and red as can be. Sadly, I came to the painful realization that Roegadyn aren't cut out for this kind of work. Here are the available selections:

The individual genders listed above have a few different looking character models in which you must choose. If you don't care about the look/gender of your retainer, you can always have Ursulie make up her mind for you. I, on the other hand strongly suggest you personally make your decision from the limited choices available.

Once you make your decision, it is time to choose your retainer's nickname. Here's to some shameless corporate advertising:

    Market Ward

Now it's time to put Starbux to use. The entrance to the Market Wards is located near the Southern Islands entrance. Upon arrival, you can select which market ward you wish to enter. Limsa Lominsa has eight individually instanced Market Wards, so make sure you choose wisely.

Once you enter, it's time to setup your retainer. If you truly wish to stand out, you can lease a stand if you are willing to pay out a small rental fee. Now that your retainer is ready to sell, drop the items you would like to sell:

Now you have to set a selling price for each item in the retainer's inventory. This appears to be a fair enough price for sheepskin:

It is never good to have an empty-looking stand, especially one you are paying top gil to rent it. Customize your stand, and you are sure to get your retainer some much-needed attention. For example, a Culinarian's stand may look something like this:

If you are flat broke or simply would rather not rent a stand, don't worry. You can always drop your retainer on the floor at no cost. Saving money is nice, isn't always easy to fight over the crowded floor of the Market Ward.

However you decide to set up your retainer, your work here is done. All you have to do now is come back later and pray your goods have been sold.

Thanks for reading, that is all for now. By the way, make sure to drop by the Market Ward yourself and buy everything from Starbux. She has all the sheepskin you will ever need in beta!

I've noticed something about the market ward and where people place their retainers. Most of the retainers are stacked RIGHT on top of the spawning area, this is nice, but you're probably going to get overlooked as people rage having to tab target to pick your retainer.

Instead, put your retainer near the teleport out area in the center of the room, I've only seen a handful ever placed here, and it's a MUST that customers come to this area of the market ward to teleport out.

Yeah forget about going to the entrance. It too closely resembles downtown Tokyo during rush hour.

I stick mine in a empty ward. I always seem to sell everything though. :P

Can retainers work just as storage? Or only to sell things?

They can work as storage if you want, you dont have to set up a bazaar.

So.. if I was to get a retainer, how long do I have it for? And if it's based on a time limit, do my items with it dissapear?

Nope, they can be used for storage, and do not expire. The only bad thing is not being able to summon it at will. Rather, you have to be in the local market wards or other designated areas to access them. For that reason, you should also try setting up a bazaar.

And I can do this in any of the main Cities?

Yeah every main city in the game has a designated market ward where you can drop the character. As of the moment, I am simply using mine for storage. I did this in each version of Beta played, and ended up selling stuff at much higher rates than I would have earlier.

Well that's interesting. I know where to purchase one in Ul'Dah, which is where I am, but I've just never given it much thought. Guess I will now.
      How much are they?

They are currently free at the moment, but the downside is you can only have 1 at this very moment. Square Enix says they are going to charge $1 extra/month for additional retainers, up to 3. If it were in the game, I would totally do this in a heartbeat, but until then I will have to wait.

Valid point. Well sweet man, thank. I think I'm pretty sold on Retainers now.
