How it's Done
The first thing to do is pick up a Weathered Alembic to make the switch to Alchemy. Next, make your way a local vendor, and buy about 10 stacks of Muddy Water. The vendors for muddy water are:
- Gridania – Humphrey (Rosewood Stalls)
- Limsa Lominsa – Fousquenet (West Hawkers' Alley)
- Ul'dah – Tataroga (Sapphire Avenue Exchange)
Why Everyone Should Do This
Even if Alchemy isn't in your plans, there are many good reasons to get your crafting to Rank 10.
- New Ability – Once rank 10 has been achieved, you get a nice new ability called Preserve.
- Quick and Easy – While you may not think 2.5 hours is extremely quick, it definitely is for FFXIV. Surely, you can do Crafting Levequests, but that takes an excessive amount of walking.
- Relaxing – I like not having to jump through all the hoops and walk to different places. I did this over the course of a nice football came, spamming enter all the way to the finish line.
- Great for Physical Experience – If you are still new to the game, this will get you some good experience for fast access to Attributes.
Even if you would rather focus on another craft, it is good to know that Preserve can be used by every Discipline of the Hand. Taking the time out to do this will give you access to another ability to use as the ranks begin to come more slowly
Total Costs
After purchasing the Weathered Alembic and the Muddy water, it only set me back a little over 19.5k gil. It also takes about 120 fire shards to complete the process, but you should already have a lot of these (if not all of them). If you don't have enough shards to cover everything, they sell for about 100 gil on most servers.
Sadly, this convenience factor doesn't translate into the other DoH's, as their initial recipes are far costlier to produce. Therefore, you should always stick to crafting levequests with every other DoH early-on.
I would like to thank Swind for sharing this method with me, and wish you luck in all Alchemy endeavors!
