  • Creating a Linkshell in Final Fantasy 14

Seeing as FFXIV is about a month away from release, I beta lot of you are looking to create or join a linkshell. Some of you may be looking to bring in old FFXI friends, while others may be in search of newer adventures. Either way, it will be very hard to accomplish things without a good linkshell by your side.

I have taken the liberty to bestow upon you all FFXI adventurers should know about linkshells. Afterward, you should be ready to create one of your own.

Things you Should Know about FFXIV Linkshells

Before moving on, here are some things you should know:
    • Any Given linkshell can have up to 128 members.
    • You can join up to 8 linkshells at a time.
    • If you wish to invite members to your linkshell, you must be standing physically next to them.
The only benefit I can see of having 8 linkshells is name reservation. Otherwise, I strongly suggest you limit yourself a bit in this regard. After all, just imagine how much text would go through your chat window if you were in 8 full guilds.

    Creating a Linkshell

If you wish to create a linkshell, get over to Limsa Lominsa and have a talk with A'shakkal. She can be found offering her serves to all adventurers at the Drowning Wench.

First, you will have to pick a name for your linkshell. Names can be anywhere from 3-31 alphanumeric characters in length. You can also include spaces in your linkshell name, just as long as they aren't used in succession.

Once your name has been chosen, it is time to pick yourself a linkshell crest. Currently, there are 58 crest motifs at your disposal.

As you may have noticed, all crests are comprised of two colors. You are allowed to combine any two colors to make your crest truly unique, so long as the colors are different.

Now that your color choice is finalized, your linkshell is officially created. All you have do do is equip the Linkpearl, and begin your recruiting process.

    Chatting in Linkshells

As you may have guessed, any chat made in the linkshell window can only be seen by its members. If you wish to chat in the linkshell, simply press '/l', followed by a space and your message. I would also recommend you set 'linkshell' as your default method of chat. Simply type '/chatmode l' you will be set.

All linkshell messages are green in color, and each different linkshell has a number assigned to it. For example, a message from your primary linkshell will have the number one between brackets (i.e. [1] – This is the linkshell message.)

    Linkshell Management

Linkshells are composed of masters, leaders and members. Only the masters and leaders carry any semblance of power. Listed are the powers associated with each position:
    Master's Powers
    Disbanding the linkshell
    Changing the linkshell's crest
    Inviting new members
    Promoting and demoting members
Kicking members and leaders from the linkshell

    Leader's Powers
    Inviting new members
    Kicking members from the linkshell
I wish you luck with your linkshell. Hopefully it will bring you many promising Eorzean journeys for years to come.

Wow don't think my brain can process chat from 8 linkshells. 2 is enough for me.

Now what I want to figure out is, how do I send messages to my other linkshells beyond my primary? Do I have to switch my primary LS every time I want to chat?

You do have to switch channels everytime you want to chat in the game. Hopefully SE will have a more convenient method sometime in the near future.

I also hope that unequipping your linkpearl will also disable the chat in the corresponding linkshells, unless requested otherwise.
