  • GPU Performance in FF14

Earlier today, I stumbled upon some very interesting information concerning GPU performance in regards to FFXIV. Several of the greatest GPU's available on the market were thoroughly tested, and the results were very interesting to say the least.

All GPU's were charted and ranked in terms of FFXIV Benchmark Score and Power Usage, and we are proud to present this interesting information to you! The GPU's listed were all tested on a cutting edge i7 CPU, with a matching motherboard to boot. That being said, let's take a look at the results!

    Low Resolution Benchmark Scores

Looks like the ATI HD 5870 takes the first round. Not only did it outperform nVidia's best, but it also sells for a cheaper retail price. As you may have noticed, the HD 5970 performed surprisingly poor, the assumption is that current benchmark does not take advantage of 2 GPUs on the same Graphics card.

If your card scored below 2500 in low resolution, now is the time to start saving for that crucial upgrade. If your card wasn't on the list, you DEFINITELY need to upgrade (unless, of course you have the HD 5970).

    High Resolution Benchmark Scores

It is only natural that the HD 5870 still stayed on top of the pack in the High Resolution. The GTX 480 did, however redeem itself a little bit by slipping up to second place.

    GPU Power Usage (Watts)

The HD 5870 is the clear winner today. Not only did it outperform everything in the FFXIV Benchmark, but it also consumes less power in comparison to its GTX counterparts.

I guess in the case of nVidia you could say.... this wasn't the way it's meant you be played. YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got the new HD 5870 and am loving it myself! If you are looking to upgrade a video card, I would highly recommend going for ATI right now. Otherwise, I'm sure nVidia will have something good coming right around the corner, they always do.

Please note that the benchmark doesn't JUST take into account a person's graphics card...usually a benchmark focuses on a number of things:

      Harddrive
      Graphics Card
      CPU
      RAM

The score that the FFXIV benchmark gives is an average of all these. I've talked with a few people now that have the same graphics card as mine, but doesn't have the CPU and RAM that my computer has and they've scored significantly lower.

Well I work in a game development environment and I can tell you that absolutely noone uses ATI or AMD. They're too unstable and aren't as compatible with a lot of programs like Nvidia.

If its just for pure gaming then probably on paper ATI looks better. Everyone has different experiences on their personal rigs no doubt, but no company I've ever worked for in the games industry employs ATI.

Just FYI to anyone who passes by, I have a new Dell XPS 16 laptop that appears to be playing very well so far at 720P and I even have 2xAA running. it has the Radeon Mobility 5730 in it and an i7 1.6ghz and 4 gigs of ram. I scored under 2k consistently after I finally got it running. I had to totally blow out all the radeon drivers and then install from scratch ATI's drivers to get it working. The only lag I really see is when I warp back to my HP and it takes forever for the servers to send all the info for the 100 players just sitting around...it never seems like graphics lag to me. Even with all the fighting in the same low level areas it appeared to be just fine.

I got a 5870 as well paired with AMD 955BE @ 3.6GHZ running on 790gx CSet very smooth everything set at max cept for AO its set to off. running eyefinity 3x1 5760x1080 res on 3 24" LED atm not as smooth as single display solution still speedy just turned AA down from 8x to 4x

the benchmark doesn't really do the real game justice my rig scored 4500+ on high res but it's so fast already i don't see any slowdown if it was any faster the game would be retarded. but now there is room to be faster since i am running 5760x1080 res =D

can't go wrong on either camp both AMD/ATI or Nvidia both will rock any game any day

      Bonus:
      AMD

The reason most people have a beef with ATI and AMD is due to the fact that they fell completely behind nVidia and Intel for about 6 months awhile back. I ended up getting a 5870 prior to reading this, and am overall quite satisfied with the performance. I think that's the reason that more game developers use Intel and nVidia, not the stability issues.

Actually ATI is still whooping Nvidia's ass, and Intel has always whooped AMDs ass. Even Nvidia's brand-spankin'-new 580 board is behind ATI's reigning 5970 in 50% or more of benchmarks. A lot of people have beef with drivers, but both companies suck donkey tube when it comes to releasing good drivers anyways. Everyone knows Intel still beats AMD's chips, but you get what you pay for there. I <3 my 6-core AMD and it was 1/3 of the price of a 6-core Intel. I run all AMD/ATI and the game runs pretty much flawlessly.

I have a monstrous system and I am unable to play the game on the highest settings, I only get around 15 fps. If I drop some of the effects a bit though I can get great 35-60 fps rates.
