What are your thoughts on the security token?

The CE comes with a one-time security token - I believe you can get one for WoW that works the same way.

Will you / would you use it? Do you feel the added security* is worth the extra hassle? Can you just go into your account and disable it at any time if you get tired of it?

*if arguing for extra security, you're not allowed to reference Francis.

Honestly I'll only use it if it's somehow preprogrammed to my account, otherwise I'll probably ignore it. Anyone with half a mind will have login name A, character name B with no association. If you're paranoid it'll offer you some sanctity, or someone who has a habit of downloading viruses/keyloggers.

It's basically an RNG associated with your account that you use to login to FF, the number changes every minute or so, and because only you have access to it only you can login to your account at that specific point in time.

Ever imagine a world with no hypothetical situations?

I think it is a lot of hassle for something you can only use one time. I'd rather have a tumbler.

Hmm. From a friend of mine: "I think *everyone* in our [WoW] guild who doesn't have the security token got their account hacked at least once."

I guess I agree that if account hacking ever becomes as aggressive on FFXIV as it has on WoW, the added hassle of a 6-digit code is less than losing all your vendorable goods.

pretty sure it's not a one time security token. it's called a one time password... in reference to the fact you push the button and get a password that only displays once. you can use it forever, and if you've ever had your account hacked you wouldn't sneer at the security it adds. i suggest you use it.

I guess I don't understand how it works. Does it give you a new code each time you log in? Or just one code once? I feel the one time code would not be useful to a keystroke mapper or whatever they're called. So every time you log in you'd need a new code?

Also, how were they hacking in WoW? I know in Aion people would get random tells from a "GM" telling them their account was compromised and please visit lookslikencsoftweb.com to confirm user name and password or they would be banned. A lot of people lost their stuff to that scam.

well they already have the software keyboard that you use the mouse to enter the pword. Unless you're foolish there shouldn't be anything running on your computer that you don't know about. I check my processes/services/etc. each time I see the processor spike strangely. Most of the time I check over nothing...lol

I've had my WoW account hacked like, ...twice.

The first time I was an officer in guild and had access to the higher levels of guild bank without limit. They cleaned out my entire character and the entire guild bank of anything of value.

Second time I just lost everything of mine, but it still hurt.

And of course they never restore everything you lost. They give you back some stuff, but it's never a full restore.

Until you've experienced having your account raped, you can't really appreciate the added security. I bought the CE almost exclusively for the token. You can never be too careful.

It gives you a new password every minute or so. So, after you put yer password in(the one you made up), you add in the security token's password. This keeps the keyloggers from still getting into yer account, even if it gets yer original password.

To the second part, they were doing everything and anything to hack yer account in WoW. When I say that, I mean it as literally as possible. I never went to any of those websites, or went into any of the e-mails. My account literally got hacked seemingly because they guessed my password correctly, and my passwords are usually pretty secure. Almost everybody I know has gotten hacked at one time or another. A lot of times, they will put keyloggers onto sites used often, for example FFXIAH, or WoWhead. Its been done. The security token is immensely helpful in keeping the hackings from happening. Also, with the fatigue system and the like, I can see FFXIV accounts going for large amounts of money when the game really gets into gear. You'll see the hackings coming very often to people without the token, so if you do not get the CE, I'd strongly advise getting a token.

I have been using the token for FFXI for ages, and it's both painless and VERY secure. It's the exact same token that they are issuing for FFXIV, and I highy recommend getting one.

SE implemented this during FFXI because hacked accounts were a very big issue. And because so many sites were spoofing Play Online and so many players were dumb enough to fall for it, account hacking was really bad.

Once you register your keyfob to your Account ID#, you will be required to enter your user name, password, and security number to every website and game feature that SE has setup. It's only really a problem if you 1) Allow friends to use your username & password to access your account (never a good idea) since they will not have the keyfob to get the security number, 2) You LOSE your keyfob and are careless with where you placed it. 3) It's not an actual problem, but it is a slight annoyance that every time you access your SE member information you will have to use the keyfob.

It really is a good thing to have for extra security. I had too many friends on FFXI who lost all their items and hard earned gil because of RMT being able to hack their unsecured account somehow and steal everything from them. It was very sad to see your friends feeling violated like that to the point they just quit the game. Get the keyfob and use it. It's not much trouble at all.

And if you do get hacked and lose all your stuff because you didn't, we won't have much pity for you.

Well... we probably will, because most of us had been there at one point, but we'll at least give you good round of "I told you so."

I never had it happen :O but yea you should take all the precautions you can with your account from what I see the password on the token changes like every 15secs or w/e I press the button. I still have the one I got for 11(only got it for the extra 80space). For the on screen keyboard couldn't someone be watching your screen and just copy your password down?

as another added measure of security i'd recommend you use "no script" with the firefox browser. that way you can browse ffxiv sites without the worry of your information getting logged.

Square Enix Security Tokens Now Available (Sep. 20)

Beginning today, you will be able to purchase Square Enix Security Tokens through the Square Enix Account Management System.

Previously, Square Enix Security Tokens could only be purchased through the PlayOnline Viewer, so users without access to the PlayOnline Viewer could not purchase a Security Token.

By logging into the Square Enix Account Management System and linking a Security Token to your account, you will be able to use the Security Token to log into all services under that account.

A Security Token will add an extra layer of security to your Square Enix Account, and we encourage all customers to use one.

    * See the below URL for more information about Square Enix Security Tokens.
